The opening of the new A10 bridge marks an important milestone for Waterbeach, improving connections to the wider Cambridge area and opening up new opportunities for the community. By providing better access to homes, jobs and local amenities, the bridge is helping to create a more connected and accessible place for current and future residents.
Residents, employees and visitors can now travel between Waterbeach and Cambridge Science Park in under 30 minutes by bike, thanks to a new largely traffic-free route that includes the recently opened pedestrian and cycle bridge over the A10.
Opened in May, the bridge and cycleway form part of Urban&Civic's wider investment in sustainable travel, alongside enhanced local bus services and the Waterbeach Travel Hub, which includes App Bikes, a community café and shop at the gateway to the development.
The project has been made possible through a strong partnership between Urban&Civic, Cambridgeshire County Council, the Combined Authority, Homes England and a wider team of delivery partners. Working alongside Graham, Stantec and Knight Architects, the project brought together expertise in engineering, design and placemaking to deliver a piece of infrastructure that not only improves connectivity but also supports healthier, more sustainable travel choices for existing and future communities.
"The new bridge supports active, low-carbon travel for current and future residents, as well as the wider community, whether commuting, exercising or exploring with the family during the Easter break.
As well as making journeys healthier and more sustainable, it will significantly improve safety by removing the need for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders to cross the A10 at road level.
there has been lots of anticipation and excitement about the bridge, so with installation and safety checks complete, we wanted to open it as soon as possible for residents to use, but we look forward to the official opening in the coming weeks."
