September at U&C is our corporate volunteering month, an initiative that we have run for the last 3 years where our employees have helped the local communities surrounding our sites wealding their DIY tools for the day.

This year 19 colleagues from across the business rolled up their sleeves to support the new, SEN school at Alconbury, Prestley Wood Academy , giving the school a much needed refresh just in time for the pupils return.

Together, the team painted and weather-proofed three sheds, outdoor play equipment and planters, carried out general garden maintenance and weeding, and gave the school windows a sparkling clean.

With a limited maintenance budget, the volunteer day enables the Academy to direct more funds towards enriching experiences for the children—a fresh, bright start to the new school year.

As a company we offer our employee’s 3 volunteer days a year and in our corporate volunteering month we try to have at least one initiative which is organised internally that our employees can take part in. This years event was organised by Natalie Leigh-Brown the Community Development Lead at Alconbury.

The volunteer day provides an excellent opportunity for us to give back to the wider communities that we are shaping.

We have an amazing new school at Alconbury Weald, but the ongoing maintenance can be quite time consuming and costly, so it’s fantastic that the volunteers from Urban&Civic were able to spend a whole day sprucing up the grounds and wooden play equipment ready for the start of the new school term.  They worked really hard, and we were delighted with the results.
