We’re proud to be part of a community that comes together to support Prestley Wood Academy, our local special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) school. Recently, we teamed up with Grafham Water Centre and local residents to donate bikes, books, and Lego to help pupils learn and grow.
We saw students and staff from Prestley Wood Academy and Cambridgeshire County Council’s smart journeys team visit Grafham Water Centre, where we donated 10 bicycles for the ‘Bikes and Books for Prestley Wood Academy’ campaign. These bikes will be repaired by a qualified mechanic working alongside the pupils, helping them learn valuable life skills. Once ready, the bikes will be used for cycle confidence lessons and enjoyed by the pupils for years to come.
Our neighbours have also pitched in, donating bikes, books for the new school library, and Lego for speech and language therapy. It’s great to see everyone working together to make a real difference. Lego Therapy is helping pupils develop social skills, and the new books are sparking curiosity and imagination.
Our smart journeys team is running a bike, book, and Lego donation campaign until the end of March. Anyone can drop off bikes at the school or leave books at New Shire Hall reception. Every donation counts.
We’re particularly grateful to AMFRESH who are one of the big businesses on site and who send fresh fruit every Wednesday for pupils and staff. It’s become a fun way to teach children about healthy eating, and the smoothies are a big hit. AMFRESH has even offered to run healthy food workshops for the school.
Our wider Urban&Civic team also held a volunteer day at the school to help Prestley Wood Academy get ready for the new school year.
As Marianne Spilling from smart journeys said, “The bike donations are a fantastic boost to support our goals of encouraging young people to form healthy and sustainable travel habits from an early age.” Caroline Place, Headteacher of Prestley Wood Academy, added, “We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of the Alconbury Weald community and Grafham Water Centre. Thank you to everyone who has donated and welcomed us since we opened last September.”

We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of the Alconbury Weald community and the Grafham Water Centre. I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated and for the welcome we’ve received from local residents and the business community since we opened in September last year.
