The new pedestrian, cycle and equestrian bridge over the A10 has been installed and finishing works are on track to finalise the predominantly off-road connection from the new Waterbeach development to Cambridge via the upgraded Mere Way early next year.
By working 24 hours a day in shifts during the A10 weekend road closures on 6/7 and 13/14
September, the dedicated team from GRAHAM has been able to secure the early completion of
the core components of the A10 bridge. The bridge was manufactured off-site and then
transported to Waterbeach for installation. The largest section was 70 tonnes and 28m long and
was lifted into place using a 650-tonne crane.
Mere Way is a key part of the vision to provide robust, sustainable transport connections to
support the development of Waterbeach, as well as providing benefits to the surrounding area.
Upgrades were carried out in 2023/24, with the improvements helping connect communities by
providing an active travel route between Waterbeach and Landbeach, to Cambridge
Science Park and beyond — for existing and future users.
The A10 bridge will complete the link for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians travelling to/from Waterbeach.
The bridge is a feat of civil engineering, and the team did a fantastic job to complete its early installation. The new bridge is a significant piece of infrastructure for Waterbeach and will provide residents and the wider community with a direct, predominantly offroad active travel route to Cambridge. The bridge sits alongside a number of other travel initiatives in the area, including the future Park & Ride and busway planned by Greater Cambridge Partnership.
